Bankruptcy guru Edward Altman sees similarities to 2007 in the credit market today

By Julia LaRoche

Legendary bankruptcy expert Dr. Edward Altman cautioned that this benign credit cycle — characterized by low default rates, low yields, low spreads, and lots of liquidity — could come to an abrupt end.
“It’s been a terrific market for investors for quite a long time and if anything is concerning it’s that we now are more than eight years into a benign credit cycle,” Altman, a professor at NYU Stern School of Business, told Yahoo Finance. “We’ve never had such a long benign cycle. And just that one little fact is something that we should be concerned about because if it comes to one and it could come to an end very dramatically.”

Altman, the creator of the financial-distress sniffing Altman Z-Score, warned in mid-2007 of a “Great Credit Bubble” and that there was going to be trouble in the market. He predicted that a meltdown would stem from corporate defaults. While the primary culprit of the financial crisis turned out to be mortgage-backed securities, i…

Only in America: Daughter's molester moves in next door to family

By CBSNews

An Oklahoma family wants to change the state law that allowed the man who molested their daughter years ago to move in next door after getting out of prison, reports CBS affiliate KWTV.

"I don't like feel like I can come home," says Danyelle Dyer, who is now speaking out about the case. "This is my safe zone and it's not really my safe zone any more."

State laws say sex offenders cannot live near schools or public playgrounds. But it says nothing about living right next to their victims.

After serving his prison sentence for lewd molestation, Dyer's step-uncle Harold English moved in with his mother, Dyer's grandmother, only about 100 yards away.

"He's right there," Dyer told the station about the man convicted of assaulting her. "And not only does it scare me for my well-being now, but it brings back a lot of things that happened in the past."

The Dyers looked into it and found out that, although seve…

SPECIAL REPORT: Police Pre-Crime Algorithm Uses Social Media Posts Against You in Real-Time

We have finally reached the moment where Orwell's nightmare in 1984 meets the movie Minority Report. We're living there right now.

And, astoundingly, we still hear people saying "Well, I haven't done anything wrong, so I don't have anything to worry about."

Did you know that any time a police officer pulls you over or responds to your 9-1-1 call, he or she is using a pre-crime algorithm which assigns you a color-coded threat score based not just on your criminal background but on everything including "flagged" purchases and all your social media posts which may include any comments that may be construed as "offensive?"

The officer will receive your color coding — red, yellow or green — before he or she ever even sees you based on factors you are not allowed to see or question. Guilt…

FBI: US losing hacker war

By for Zero Day

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) says it is losing the war against hackers. Shawn Henry, an FBI executive assistant director who is preparing to leave the organization after working for more than two decades with the bureau, says that the U.S. is not keeping up with hackers. Thousands of individuals and groups around the world are taking aim at businesses and government websites, including those in the U.S., and Henry says "we're not winning."

"I don't see how we ever come out of this without changes in technology or changes in behavior, because with the status quo, it's an unsustainable model," Henry told The Wall Street Journal. "Unsustainable in that you never get ahead, never become secure, never have a reasonable expectation of privacy or security."

Furthermore, Henry said FBI agents are increasingly coming across data stolen from compa…

Judge orders Dookhan to pay $2m to wrongly convicted man

By Shawn Musgrave BostonGlobe

A federal judge has awarded more than $2 million to a man wrongly convicted based on evidence falsified by Annie Dookhan, the former state chemist who created a multimillion-dollar crisis in the state’s criminal justice system. It is the first case in which Dookhan has been ordered to compensate any of the thousands of defendants whose cases she tainted.

US District Judge Indira Talwani determined that Leonardo Johnson, 53, of Dorchester, is entitled to compensatory and punitive damages for the 15 months he served in prison, because Dookhan gave “false testimony to convict an innocent man.”

Dookhan has 30 days to appeal the award amount. Her attorney, Nicolas Gordon of Mansfield, did not respond to questions about the ruling.

“Judge Talwani’s damages assessment provides fair and just compensation for Mr. Johnson, who has suffered and continues to suffer emotional and financial devastation,” said attorney Ilyas Rona, who represents Johnson. “Wh…

Muslim Front Group runs training camps for Terrorist in the US

By Underground Newz

According to the FBI, there are at least 22 Islamic paramilitary communes in the US. These communes are operated by the Pakistan-based group Jamaat al-Fuqra and its main US front group, Muslims of the Americas.

Conservative blogger Pamela Geller has been keeping an eye on the camps because she's lonely, bored and horny and has nothing better to do.

Geller says that most of the members of these camps are African-Americans who have converted to Islam while doing time in state or federal prison.

The group trains members in the use of small arms and military tactics.

In fact, a summary by the FBI states: “The captioned investigation of the Muslims of America is based upon specific and articulate facts giving justification to believe they are engaged in international terrorism or activities in preparation thereof…”

Muslims of the Americas (MOA) is not listed as a terrorist organization by the State Department.

Geller comments:
Probably they haven’t been raided…

German anti-terror police uncover hidden paramilitary training camps for far-right extremists

By Lizzie Dearden

Guns, weapons and drugs have been seized from a network of right-wing extremists operating paramilitary training camps in German forests amid fears of a potential attack.
Investigators in the state of Thuringia said at least 13 known suspects were part of the group, including some from an “internationally active right-wing movement”.
The state office of criminal investigation said short and long-range guns, ammunition and other weaponry was uncovered alongside a small amount of drugs.
Police also seized right-wing propaganda, mobile phones and computers in dawn raids at 14 properties in Thuringia, Erfurt and Göttingen, in Lower Saxony.
A spokesperson said the operation targeted a “criminal organisation” accused of setting up paramilitary training camps in the region’s forests, adding: “Some of the suspects are believed to be members of an internationally-active right-wing extremist movement, which aims to abolish the social and governmental order of Ge…
